On Friday the 27th of February, former Israelis and other European Jews organised protests against the new Israeli death sentence law proposal in several cities across the EU. I was one of the organisers of the Prague protest, which we set in front of the Israeli embassy. Below is my speech from the event, translated to English for the benefit of non Czech-speaking readers and in the original Czech.

Good afternoon everyone. Thank you for coming here to support us. I'm not standing here today as a resident of the Czech republic, nor as a citizen of the European Union, but as an Israeli. As an Israeli who has one question to ask the politicians of the European Union: what is your red line?

If the never-ending occupation of Palestinian land for decades now isn't a red line, what is?

If the racist nation-state bill, which says no other people other than the Jewish people have a right to self-determination, isn't a red line, what is?

If the ruling of the International Court of Justice that Israel violates international agreements for the elimination of racist segregation and apartheid isn't a red line, what is?

If the killing of almost a hundred thousand people, most of which according to Israel didn't belong to any terrorist organisation, isn't a red line, what is?

If the declaration by Israeli politicians that the war in Gaza “will be like a second Nakba” isn't a red line, what is?

If the opinion of dozens of organisations and hundreds of experts that Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza isn't a red line, what is?

This law proposal that we're protesting against isn't exceptional in it's racist, nor in the effect it's going to have. It is however exceptional in that for the first time the law will explicitly apply differently to Jews and Arabs. The Israeli regime is already that of apartheid and genocide, but this law will be the codification of this regime. The racism will no longer be subtext, but text.

Therefore I am asking politicians here in Czechia, in the EU and around the world: if this isn't a red line, what is?

Dobré odpoledne, všichni. Moc vám děkuji, že jste nás podpořit přišli.

Nestojím zde jako obyvatelkou České republiky ani jako občankou Evropské unie, ale jako Izraelka. Jako Izraelka, která se chce zeptat politiků Evropské unie na jednu otázku: co je pro vás červenou linií?

Pokud nekonečná okupace území Palestinců, který trvá už desítky let, není červená linie, čím je?

Pokud rasistický zákon národů, podle kterého žádný lid než židovský právo na sebeurčení nemá, není červená linie, čím je?

Pokud stanovisko Mezinárodního soudního dvora, že Izraelský stát porušuje úmluvy o odstranění rasové segregace a apartheidu, není červená linie, čím je?

Pokud povraždění téměř sta tisíc lidí, většina z nich podle Izraele žádné “teroristické organizaci” nepatří, není červená linie, čím je?

Pokud tvrzení Izraelských politiků, že válka v Pásmu Gazy “bude jako druhá Nakba”, není červená linie, čím je?

Pokud tvrzení desítek organizací a stovek odborníků, že Izrael páchá genocidu v Pásmu Gazy, není červená linie, čím je?

Ten návrh zákonu, vůči kterému protestujeme, není mimořádní svým rasismem ani svým vlivem. Ten zákon je ale mimořádní tím, že poprvé bude explicitně platit jiné zákony pro židy a Araby. Izraelský režim je už režim apartheidu a genocidy, ale ten zákon je kodifikace tohoto režimu. Rasismus už nebude subtext, ale text.

Proto se zeptám politiků tady v Česku, v Evropské unii a kolem světa: Pokud to není červená linie, čím je?
