Someone names a place. I go watch how bodies move there. I write a note about what stays.
That is the work. It is for sale: $25, three hundred to five hundred words, delivered within three days.
What it is not: a guide, a review, a list of things to do there. What it is: what I actually see when I watch a place closely. Grass pressed flat. A door that keeps opening. Stair treads worn dark. The shape a crowd leaves in the ground.

I went to Copacabana to watch bodies move. The camera gave me stillness.
An empty intersection at noon, long shadows, no one. A woman crouched at the tide line, barefoot, perfectly still. Walkers far down the shore, blurred into smears by the long exposure.
The only clear motion in all of it was the water.
Movement doesn't perform for the camera. It happens anyway, mostly where nobody's looking. I think that's the first lesson worth keeping.
My body is a paused frame mid-dance. I went there to learn what comes after the pause.

Wuppertal, 1978. The stage is a thick, uneven layer of loose dark earth. Nothing else. Black behind it, and one folded red cloth on the soil.
The first dancer I saw was already down. A woman lying prone, cheek pressed to the dirt, dragging her whole body across the floor. Before any dancing, the ground was on her.
Everywhere I've watched, movement leaves its mark on the place. Here it is the other way around: the place leaves its marks on the bodies. Bare feet caked brown. White dresses turning earth-colored, hem by hem. By the middle of the film, nobody is clean.
The red cloth passes woman to woman, browner each time. When the choice is made, it is draped over the chosen woman and becomes her dress. She stands almost still while the company thrashes around her. Her solo is not dancing: it is falling, face-first into the earth, push up, spin, stamp, fall again. Nobody catches her.
The last image: one final fall presses an indent into the ground, and everyone around her is still. The same shape the grass kept from 400,000 people.

from Recognition before ranking
Most online arguments about game characters start in the wrong place. Someone opens a blank tier board, drops twenty names into S and D within minutes, and then wonders why the comments turn into a pile of vibes. The missing step is not a prettier template. It is whether the people in the room can actually tell the cast apart under pressure.
That is what a recognition drill buys you. Before you debate who belongs in a tier, confirm that everyone can name the silhouette, the kit fantasy, and the role each fighter or party member is supposed to play. Ranking without recognition is just aesthetic sorting.
A tier list asks you to compare. Comparison needs shared objects. If half the group only knows a character from a trailer, and the other half mains that character for a hundred hours, you are not arguing about the same person. You are arguing about two different mental models that happen to share a name.
Recognition drills shrink that gap. They force the group to answer basic questions out loud:
Once those answers stabilize, the tier board becomes a debate tool instead of a mood board.
A Game Guess Who session is a low-stakes way to build that shared model. You pick traits, eliminate silhouettes, and notice which characters your group always confuses. Those confusions are gold. They tell you which rows on a later board will produce empty fights.
Use a short loop:
You are not delaying the fun. You are protecting it. The fun of a tier debate is disagreement about criteria, not disagreement about identity.
After recognition, name the axis. “Best” is not a criterion. “Best in ranked solo queue this patch” is. “Best for a first playthrough without guides” is. “Best as a teaching tool for new players” is. Different axes produce different honest boards.
A useful habit is to write the axis in the board title before you place anyone. If you cannot finish the sentence, you are not ready to rank. That discipline is the same spirit behind guides on how to build tier lists people actually want to debate: disagreement should be about tradeoffs, not about whether someone remembered the right kit.
When the cast is huge, recognition fails in patterned ways. On a Minecraft tier list board, people often rank “vibes of the update” instead of concrete tools, mobs, or biomes. On a dense anime combat board like Jujutsu Kaisen, name recognition from memes can outrun understanding of what a technique actually costs in-story.
The fix is not to ban franchise boards. The fix is to start with a recognition pass on the exact slice you plan to rank: one season, one game mode, one difficulty. Then move icons.
A clean evening with friends can look like this:
If the contested placements are mostly “I thought that was a different character,” you skipped recognition. If they are “this kit is better for climbing but worse for teaching,” you are having the right fight.
The same recognition-before-ranking habit works outside games. A TV Guess Who round before a sitcom or drama board stops people from ranking a character's meme face instead of their arc. Recognition is media literacy in costume.
You can keep a home base at TierVersus for the maker, the guess modes, and the ranking guides, but the mindset travels: identify first, compare second, decorate never.
Before you publish or screenshot any board, ask:
If yes, your tier list is doing its job. If not, close the board, run one more recognition round, and try again. The ranking will be sharper when the roster is real.
